RETURN TO GIVE THANKS | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (October 12, 2025) with Sign Language Today is the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time, and the gospel proclaims the healing of ten lepers. On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus entered a village, where ten lepers cried out to him: “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” In response, he told them, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” Saint Luke tells us that “as [the lepers] were going they were cleansed.” This means that they were healed by the mercy of Jesus who “saw” them. Having seen their suffering, and telling them to show themselves to the priests, Jesus right then and there pronounced them healed. The task of the priests in their culture at the time was to confirm that the lepers have indeed been cleansed and healed. What is moving in this scene, brothers and sisters, is the fact that the Samaritan leper, noticing his healing along the way, returned to Jesus and glorified God. His gratitude moved him to show himself to Jesus—the only priest who can confirm that he is both cleansed and saved. “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you,” the Lord said.
