Their self-name, Pga K’nyau, means “people,” reflecting pride in their humanity and cultural heritage. Traditional Pga K’nyau clothing is handwoven, using natural-dyed cotton, with patterns that tell stories of family, beliefs, and cultural traditions. Unmarried women typically wear long white or red dresses, representing purity and youth. Married women wear black or indigo tops paired with red woven skirts, often decorated with Job’s tears beads, cross-stitch patterns, or intricate embroidery. Men traditionally wear red woven shirts with white or colorful stripes, though modern styles now include more colors and variations. Despite these changes, handweaving remains central to their identity, preserving the traditional techniques and cultural meanings of the Pga K’nyau. Their clothing continues to be a vital symbol of heritage, passed down from generation to generation.
