"Om Namah Shivaya" is one of the oldest mantras. "Na-mah Shi-va-ya" is known as the sacred 5-syllabled mantra, the panchakshari. By adding the 'Om', it becomes invested with the power of the mantra of mantras, the oldest continuously chanted mantra and syllable from India, the syllable-word that is the origin and destination of the entire universe. Together therefore, the two mantras pack the best possible meditative sound object for the mind to contemplate. "Om Namah Shivaya" is a koan that unravels the structure and true nature of the very mind and being that contemplates it. The five constituent elements of the universe merge into the primal being, the primeval vibration, the Word of all words. Earth (na), water (ma), fire (shi), air (va), and sky (ya) face and merge into their essence in consciousness. "Namah Shivaya" accomplishes this on its own, but the "Om" hastens the process of identification as we prepare to meet our true and eternal essence and being.
