The video features the wooden sword ritual portion. After the wooden sword ritual, a prayer is recited, intended to convey the merit of divine protection. We hope you will watch until the end. [About the wooden sword and the nine characters] The wooden sword ritual, performed by a qualified practitioner, is referred to as "prayer," "wooden sword ritual," or "shūho," but they all mean the same thing. The nine characters are cut while reciting the key prayer. There are several ways to perform the kuji cut, depending on the oral tradition. This refers to the movement of the arms (wooden sword). In this video, the ritual is performed using the basic form, which is a bit quicker and requires more forceful arm movements. The basic form is primarily difficult because it makes it easier to notice any irregularities in the kuji (such as not being able to cut in the same place as a dot) and makes it harder to stabilize. The wooden sword used in this video is made from the sacred Kokuhoutou (also known as a national treasure sword). It is milled from the same tree as the wooden sword used in the previous purification video. Famous for the unique sound it produces, wooden swords are now considered rare. They are made of dry wood that is heavy and hard enough to sink in water. The wooden sword used in this video is much larger than usual. [Regarding the sound recording this time] Once again, recording the sound of this wooden sword was extremely difficult, and the actual sound may sound different depending on the environment, such as the speakers on which it is played back. I tried using a slightly better microphone than the one I used in the previous video. (The sound may differ between PCs, tablets, and smartphones.) It was extremely difficult to hear certain ranges of sound, and since I'm not a professional sound recorder, this was extremely challenging. The sound may sound different depending on the playback device, so I would appreciate it if you could try different devices and volume levels to find the setting that suits you. [About the Nine Characters Used in This Purification Ceremony] In this video, I'm cutting the nine characters of protection called Shoten Yogodan (Protection of the Deities). It's also called Kodan (Post-stage), Godan (Protection of the Deities), Tomekuji (Second Character), Mamorikuji (Protection of the Deities), or Goshinkuji (Protection of the Self). When performed as a prayer for protection to the principal image or deities enshrined in the main hall, it is also called Horakukaji (Horraku Kaji). The traditional practice involves cutting a pentagram while chanting "The secret of the Tathagata, the supernatural power." After this, the nine characters from the Lotus Sutra's "Myoho-renge-kyo," Chapter 16 of the "Tathagata's Life Span," which is the origin of the nine-character chanting technique, are cut. The nine characters are from the Lotus Sutra's "Myoho-renge-kyo," which states, "This excellent medicine now resides here." The origin of the nine-character chanting technique lies in the teaching that the heavenly deities and good spirits of the Lotus Sutra (Kishimo Daisonjin being one of the most prominent ones) act as envoys of the Buddha to provide protection through the great compassion of the eternal Buddha for the salvation of all living beings. The word "kaji" means "to receive protection," and is a sacred ritual or practice that grants the protective power of the Buddhas, heavenly beings, and benevolent spirits. This final nine-character protection ritual follows the previous ritual, the "Five-Step Exorcism" (from the previous purification video). The final nine characters of the "Kanmon" (the sutra chanted while swinging the wooden sword), "The First Chapter of the Myoho-renge-kyo," represent the Lotus Sutra as a whole and signify the very merits of the Lotus Sutra, as expounded in its eight volumes and 28 chapters.
