Le Califat, origine et histoire

Roundtable June 7, 2015 Arab World Institute - Paris Throughout its history, the caliphate has been associated with a threefold ideal: fidelity to the prophetic model, unity of the Muslim community, and the universality of Islam. In reality, rivalries between claimants often prevailed; Sunnis and Shiites developed competing models, and the caliphate experienced long periods of decline until its abolition by Atatürk in 1924, which raised the question of an Islam without a caliph. This roundtable will address some major themes and issues in the history of the caliphate, from its origins to the 20th century, through four presentations: the origins of the caliphate, the model of the Shiite imamate, multiple caliphates, and the Ottoman caliphate: a political weapon during the time of the crisis.
