Patrice Lumumba is the quintessential figure of African decolonization in the 1960s. The first president of the Republic of the Congo, he delivered a speech before the King of Belgium denouncing Belgian colonization in Africa. This earned him the enmity of Europe and the United States, who saw Lumumba as an ally of the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War.
