Srinagar: Jamia Masjid Reflects Kashmir's Religious, Cultural History

Jamia Masjid of Srinagar presents a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, which is a blend of Indian and Mughal styles. The impressive structure of this shrine consists of 370 wooden pillars that speak of architectural excellence. It is surrounded by broad lanes, and covers a large area that is 384 feet in length and 381 feet in breadth. A square-shaped garden lies in the centre of this mosque that can be used as a prayer space. Over 33,333 people can offer prayer at a time in this mosque. The mosque is a significant religious edifice, situated in the heart of the city's old part. This mosque was constructed in AD 1400, under the patronage of Sultan Sikandar. Years later, his son Zain-ul-Abidin carried out the renovation and extension of the mosque.
