Having recently lost her son and composer, Ziyad Rahbani, at the age of 69, Fairuz was seen in public for the first time in a long while at her son’s funeral. Even at that ceremony, as she has for decades, she stood as a figure who united the Lebanese people around a shared emotion. Born Nuhad Haddad, Fairuz’s passion for music began at a very young age. The turning point of her life was her meeting with the Rahbani brothers. The collaboration that began with Assi and Mansur Rahbani evolved into one of the longest-lasting partnerships in the history of Arab music. By the 1950s, her fame had extended beyond Lebanon. She was invited to Egypt and sang for Palestine. With songs such as “Raji’un” and “Zahrat al-Medain,” she became one of the most powerful voices of the resistance. So much so that many Palestinians grew up believing she herself was Palestinian. Her concert in Baalbek in 1957 transformed Fairuz into a cultural symbol of Lebanon. Her voice rising among the ancient temples earned her the title “the seventh column of Baalbek.” Amid the hardships she endured, she produced dozens of albums, hundreds of songs, as well as musicals and films. Today, Fairuz’s voice continues to echo through the streets—sometimes as a morning song, sometimes as a lament, and sometimes as a reminder rising from among the bombs.
