Soviet textbooks made him a symbol of "bourgeois nationalism" and anti-Semitism. The émigré diaspora—an icon of martyrdom. But who was he really? In this video, we're not looking for simple answers. Because there aren't any. There's a man—a boy from Poltava with shining eyes, a seminarian, a journalist, an accountant—whom the revolution thrust into the role of commander. A man with no military training who became Ukraine's first Minister of Defense. A leader without territory, who continued to issue orders when the state existed only on paper. We investigate: the pogrom in Proskuriv—1,500 killed in one morning. Was the Warsaw Pact a betrayal or the only way out? Bolbocean's execution—a strict vertical or arbitrary rule?
