The Kopetdag State Nature Reserve was founded in 1976. It covers an area of ​​49,800 hectares, including over 46,000 hectares of forest and 3,600 hectares of meadow. It was created for the conservation and comprehensive study of mountain steppe and mountain forest ecosystems, as well as floodplain tree and shrub thickets—tugai. The protected area occupies a belt of high and medium mountains in the Central Kopetdag, from Archman Station in the west to Gyaurs Station in the east. The terrain is mountainous, with ridges cut by deep gorges and valleys. The northern part is located on steep rocky slopes, while the southern part is more gently sloping. The reserve consists of four distinct sections, at elevations ranging from 700 to 2,800 meters above sea level.
