Mercado Oriental is the heart of Managua and one of the largest markets in Central America. Instead of following a map, I decided to get intentionally lost with one goal: connect with local people and experience the real Nicaragua. 🇳🇮 As someone whose father is from Nicaragua, this trip meant more than just visiting a market. It was an opportunity to explore my roots, learn the culture, and understand why Nicaraguans are so proud of their country. Along the way, I learned some hilarious Nica slang, met incredibly hardworking people, and discovered why everyone insisted I had to try baho, one of Nicaragua’s most iconic dishes. What stood out the most wasn’t the market itself—it was the kindness, humor, and hospitality of the people who welcomed me like one of their own.
