As the eastern starting point of the Silk Road, and a hub for cultural exchange between East and West, Gyeongju, the once-splendid capital of Silla, is regaining its original form. Gyeongju, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also boasts numerous historical sites that hold the secrets of ancient history. Among them, 14 key sites are currently being restored, reviving the image of Silla's millennial capital. On October 23, 2023, we met with Kim Chang-kwon, the newly appointed head of the Silla Royal Capital Core Historic Site Restoration and Maintenance Promotion Team. We discussed the present and future of the Silla Royal Capital Restoration. Director Kim Chang-kwon graduated from Dongguk University with a degree in Public Administration and worked for the Cultural Heritage Administration for 10 years. Thanks to the strong connection I developed with Gyeongju during my college years, I have dedicated myself to caring for and preserving its precious cultural heritage. Now, I am preparing for a new challenge: reviving my second home, Gyeongju, as the capital of the Silla Dynasty. From the Three Kingdoms Period to Unified Silla, the Silla capital was the royal residence and the central capital of all sectors, including politics, economy, and society. Later, when Silla unified the Three Kingdoms, it became the center of its ruling system. Seorabeol, one of the four great ancient cities, was a planned city, with a grid-like layout, and was known as a megalopolis with a population of approximately 900,000 and approximately 1.8 million households. Gyeongju, a city that enjoyed its heyday during the Silla Dynasty, envisioned a city with a splendid history and culture that belies its 1,500-year history. It was losing its luster as the traces of time accumulated. The restoration of the core relics of the Silla Dynasty is breathing new life into Gyeongju for the next millennium. Representative achievements include the Geumgwanchong Tomb Preservation Exhibition Hall and the Silla Tomb Information Center. Geumgwanchong, where the first gold crown from the Silla Dynasty was unearthed, has been restored to a modern architectural form. Inside, visitors can observe the construction process of the Silla tombs firsthand. The Tomb Information Center, which provides vivid 3D images of Silla tombs at a glance, has established itself as a representative historical and cultural space, capturing the splendor of Silla. A popular destination for citizens is the Jjoksaem District. Jjoksaem District, once a large-scale burial site for the Silla royal capital from the 4th to 6th centuries, severely damaged by the construction of private residences since the 1960s. The Cultural Heritage Administration and Gyeongju City have steadily purchased the land, excavated and restored it, and it has now been transformed into a beautiful Tomb Park, a premier leisure destination for citizens. Hwangnyongsa Temple, a symbol of national defense and the unification of the Three Kingdoms, and the most magnificent temple during the millennium of Silla, was destroyed by the Mongol invasions of the Goryeo Dynasty, leaving only traces. The Silla Royal Capital Restoration Project will allow visitors to experience Hwangnyongsa Temple in its prime. Using augmented reality (AR) digital technology, visitors will be able to walk through the temple's interior and exterior, a unique experience. While our previous achievements have focused on excavation and restoration, we plan to develop diverse content utilizing the excavation findings, helping citizens enjoy cultural experiences. We hope that the Silla Royal Capital will one day be completed, further elevating Gyeongju's global standing as a historical and cultural city.
