How 90 Beavers Restored 1.5 Million Acres After Dropped From Cargo Plane

Imagine looking up at the sky in 1948 and seeing wooden boxes floating down under parachutes. Inside those boxes were beavers. It sounds like something out of a cartoon, but it really happened. After World War II, beavers in parts of Idaho had become a headache for farmers and homeowners. They flooded roads, blocked irrigation canals, and cut down valuable trees. Wildlife officials wanted to save the animals, not kill them, but moving beavers deep into the mountains by horse often stressed them so badly that many didn’t survive the journey. So the Idaho Department of Fish and Game came up with an idea that seemed completely ridiculous at the time. Why not move them by airplane? Using surplus military parachutes left over from the war, biologists designed wooden crates that would safely open when they touched the ground. Before trusting the system with dozens of animals, they tested it on one especially patient beaver named Geronimo. Geronimo survived jump after jump and reportedly became so used to the process that he would calmly climb back into his crate for another flight. Eventually, 76 beavers were relocated into Idaho’s remote Chamberlain Basin, and 68 survived the operation, proving that one of the strangest wildlife experiments in American history was also surprisingly successful. More than seventy-five years later, the story still feels unbelievable. But it’s real, documented in photographs, reports, and state archives—a reminder that sometimes conservation requires a little creativity, a lot of determination, and apparently, a parachute.
