Aotearoa\STRING QUARTET

COMPOSED FOR THE BERGAMOT QUARTET DURING THE 2026 GABRIELA ORTIZ COMPOSING STUDIO BY OACADEMY PROGRAM NOTE: This work is inspired by my experience in New Zealand, Aotearoa. Through the piece, I seek to explore and translate that experience into music, shaped by my own artistic voice and sense of sound. Although the work contains many elements, two ideas remain constant throughout. The first is a six-note melody derived from the syllables of “Aotearoa. ” This motif travels across the entire piece, constantly transforming and appearing in different forms. It reflects the way I perceive nature: a landscape of endless variations. Different shades of green, shifting blues in the water, changing skies, rainbows, clouds, crepuscular rays, and rain. All of these elements, though diverse in appearance, ultimately belong to the same essence: this beautiful land, Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud. This aspect of the work is dynamic, vibrant, and playful, mirroring the energy and vitality of nature in New Zealand. In contrast, there is a more reflective and introspective dimension. This part is connected to the memory of my father. During my time in this country, I have been surrounded by birds and their songs. My father and I shared a deep appreciation for birds, and one day I heard a call that felt strikingly familiar, it resembled the way he used to call me. I later recognized this sound in a bird I had never heard before. That moment created a profound emotional connection, linking memory, nature, and place. This slower, more introspective section expresses the feeling that my father is still present with me in these lands, allowing me to remember him with warmth. All these experiences, nature, memory, and the living cultural presence of the Māori people, with their powerful energy and strong sense of movement are brought together in the work. Through my own artistic perspective, I aim to integrate and express these elements as a unified musical experience.
