The Shershnyas' hut wasn't new. Stepan's father had built it, and some of the logs, they said, had come from an old tavern that had burned down about forty years earlier. That's how they did things back then: if a log was whole, why waste it? They'd trim it, transport it, and use it in the new frame. Only the old folks grumbled, "Not every log from a fire is fit for a house." But who listened to them? The log was dry, strong, money saved—that was all there was to it.
