William Monteith 21-11-1988

On 21 November in 1988, IRA terrorists murdered William Monteith, 59, Reserve policeman. Married father from Killen, near Castlederg, shot at end of his shift. Nephew on duty at nearby observation post, grappled with the murderer and chased him along the street in Castlederg, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Gun used was recovered when an intending murderer, JJ Connolly, was planting a bomb under a vehicle the following year and it exploded prematurely. It was also connected with murder of off-duty UDR Lance Corporal Darcy, on 4 June 1988.
