Dr. Oliver Sacks On Coping with Brain Injury and Illness
John Hockenberry -- three-time Peabody Award winner, four-time Emmy winner, and host of NPR's The Takeaway -- interviews Dr. Oliver Sacks, the best-selling author and professor of neurology at NYU School of Medicine, about the ability of the human brain to cope with injury and illness. The event was presented by Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Medical Center in recognition of Brain Injury Awareness Month. Dr. Sacks speaks about the fascinating ways the brain compensates for injury and illness, developing new identities and skills in response to the hidden "disabilities" that come with brain injury. Sometimes, he notes, it even leads to the discovery of newfound talents and abilities. Dr. Sacks is best known for his collections of neurological case histories, including The Man who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, The Mind's Eye, and Awakenings, which inspired the 1990 Academy Award-nominated feature film starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams. The New York Times has referred to Dr. Sacks as "the poet laureate of medicine." Learn more about Rusk Rehabilitation's Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program: http://www.nyulangone.org/locations/r...
