2017 Mazda CX-5 Parking Brake System Malfunction

Parking brake error resulting in flashing red brake light, solid yellow parking brake light, and flashing yellow parking brake switch light that will not extinguish. Console system message reads “Parking brake system malfunction.” Brake fluid level in reservoir is near full. EDIT1: this initial problem was the RIGHT REAR electronic parking brake (EPB) motor, which failed and had to be replaced along with the right rear caliper, cost was $700. EDIT2: A year later the symptoms reoccurred, which proved to be the LEFT REAR EPB motor. This also had to be replaced (the caliper was apparently OK), cost was $500. $1200 in brake system components have no business failing at 25k and 45k miles, especially after a recall was implemented for these components for the 2016 model year. I filed a complaint with Mazda USA, 800-222-5500. We are very fond of Mazdas in general, this is our third, and the CX-5 in particular, but these issues were a determining factor in choosing a Subaru instead of another CX-5 when we recently needed to expand our fleet. EDIT3: Having now owned the car through 60k miles and having just replaced all four rotors and sets of pads, a process which included having to adjust the EPB motors' engagement points with the piston using the hex screw covered by a plastic shroud, I have concluded that this vehicle's brake design is unnecessarily complicated because of the EPB. I like this vehicle very much but would not get another one. My other gripe with it is that the CarPlay functionality doesn't use the touchscreen, only the dial/click button, which is a stupid limitation. Our Subaru Crosstrek is a superior car overall.
