Many people do not care for their chaeto properly and it dies or is dying in there sump, sometimes it just doesn't grow or turns white and dies. Chaeto is often added to a reef tank sump to reduce nitrates and phosphates but it needs more than just basic lighting to survive. Giving the chaeto decent lighting can make a huge difference in the speed at which it grows. Also adding fertilizer is essential for long term growth and vigor of your chaetomorpha. Although there is often enugh flow in the sump of a saltwater aquarium, if it is slow it may also be worth adding a powerhead.
