Arctic Day 5 Ice Edge

Shalini's Blog: Today we reached a thrilling milestone on our expedition cruise: the ice edge — the dramatic boundary where the Arctic sea ice meets the open ocean. Reaching it means we've successfully ventured into one of the most remote and untamed corners of the planet. And just to put things into perspective: we were only 1,000 km from the North Pole. Practically neighbors. 😄 The ice edge transforms the Arctic Ocean into a surreal landscape of towering ice formations and drifting floes, sculpted by wind, waves and water. Adding to the atmosphere was a constant tug-of-war between sunshine and overcast skies, while light snow drifted through the air, making the scene feel even more Arctic. It's also one of the richest wildlife zones in the region. Seals, whales and countless seabirds gather here to feed where the icy and open waters meet. As for us? We mostly saw birds. Lots of them. Watching these hardy little creatures dive into the frigid water as if it were a tropical resort or lounge casually on slabs of ice was impressive enough. To top it all off, we cruised quietly alongside the ice field in a Zodiac, soaking in the scenery and the sheer scale of this frozen wilderness. Some destinations have beaches; ours had drifting sea ice, falling snow and birds with remarkable cold tolerance. At 28°F (-2.22°C), my fingers were so numb that operating a camera required determination, courage and possibly a medical waiver. But I had promises to keep 😜🤪. So I braved the cold, ignored my rapidly disappearing dexterity and ventured into what felt like the early stages of hypothermia—all in the name of capturing a few photos.
