A Short Film on Standardisation of Pashmina || NOOR E PASHM
Pashmina is one of the most premium and finest quality of wool which is obtained from the Changthang Plateau in Tibet and part of the Ladakh region in the Himalayas of northern India. Its distinct features and physical properties like softness and warmth makes it much more expensive than sheep wool. The annual production of Pashmina in India is 40-50 tonnes harvested from nearly 2.5 Lakhs goats. The Changthangi area, producing the majority of Indian Pashmina, and temperature in these areas ranges from -40°C to +4°C. India accounts for only less than 1% of Pashmina’s total world production. Pashmina goat (Capra Aegagrushircus) species have been declared as endangered species due to its very low population. The Annual Pashmina production per animal in China and Russia has been reported to be ranging from 700 grams to 1000 grams but in India, it is far lower and is about 250 grams in Changthangi goats. It is a great matter of concern and the Government has to make necessary policy interventions for exploring effective breeding techniques leading to a decline in mortality rate and an increase in production. This will also result in an increase in the livelihood of the local nomad population. BIS is developing an Indian Standard for identification of Pashmina on priority and exploring the method for Identification of Pashmina through Artificial Intelligence (active element signature technology). A test method for the identification of Hand-spun/Hand-woven Pashmina and machine-made pashmina is in the process. A certification scheme for ensuring the availability of genuine pashmina products shall be framed and implemented by BIS for the benefit of local artisans. This standard has been launched on 2nd August 2019 at Leh preceded by an awareness rally of Bikes and Cars from BIS HQ, New Delhi.
