The First Beloved: A 1,000-Year-Old Sufi Text on the Nature of Love

The Brethren of Purity on the nature of love. A primary-source transmission from the Rasa'il Ikhwan al-Safa, translated from the Arabic. Sometime in tenth-century Basra, an anonymous brotherhood known as the Ikhwan al-Safa, the Brethren of Purity, composed fifty-two epistles and hid their names inside them. The thirty-seventh treats the nature of love. What you are hearing is its text, carried over into English straight from the Arabic, with the framing voice kept to a minimum. The Rasa'il Ikhwan al-Safa is one of the great encyclopedias of medieval Islamic thought, a meeting point of Sufism, Islamic Neoplatonism, Pythagorean number, and the esoteric sciences. It was read for centuries across the Sufi and Ismaili traditions and shaped the language of divine love that later runs through Ibn Arabi and the philosophy of ishq. This epistle ends on the line the whole tradition turns on: God is the First Beloved, and the sphere turns only out of longing toward Him.
