She went through the hell of Stalin's terror, lost her husband in Soviet concentration camps and was forced to flee halfway around the world. Finding herself in tropical Brazil, and later in Canada, she did not break down, but began to write in a juicy, lively Ukrainian language. It was her adventure novels and documentary memoirs about the "Yezhov region" that made foreign readers shudder, and the novel "Stones under the Scythe" became one of the first frank works about the horrors of the Holodomor.
