This guide give some key areas to check when inspecting mk. 2 Puntos with a view to purchase. The example car here is a 2002 Fiat Punto 1.2 8-valve petrol (60 bhp) with no power steering. The mk. 2 Punto (aka Punto 188) is a great potential purchase for low budget motoring. The technology on them is simple and durable if well-maintained. Major areas to look out for are rust along the sills and floors, engine head gasket failure (mainly a problem on the 1.2 petrol engine), problems with the electric power steering, other electrical gremlins and a failing front wiper linkage. As with most cars, it's better to buy an example with lots of documented service history. A good Punto is easy to run, drives well and is practical. Parts are inexpensive and fuel consumption low.
