Diurnal Saints _________________________________________________________________________ The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary is a Catholic devotion that invites the faithful to meditate on the principal sufferings that the Virgin Mary experienced throughout her life; Its purpose is to foster piety and a deeper spiritual union with the Mother of God, recalling her strength and sorrow at decisive moments in the life of Jesus Christ. Each "sorrow" corresponds to a specific episode in his life, and during the recitation of the Rosary, we reflect on these moments of suffering, which are as follows: Simeon's prophecy, when he announces that a sword will pierce Mary's soul (Lk 2:25-35); the flight into Egypt to protect the Child Jesus from Herod (Mt 2:13-15); the loss of Jesus in the Temple for three days (Lk 2:41-50); the encounter with Jesus on the way to Calvary (Lk 23:27-31); the crucifixion and death of Jesus (Jn 19:25-30); and the reception of Jesus' body in his Mother's arms after his death (Lk 23:50-54). and his burial in the tomb (Mt 27:57-61). This rosary, also known as the “Rosary of Sorrows,” has a structure similar to the traditional rosary, but instead of the usual mysteries, these seven sorrows are meditated upon, with prayers such as the Our Father and the Hail Mary recited for each, while deeply contemplating Mary’s suffering and faith. This devotion also seeks to console the faithful, helping them to understand and spiritually accompany Mary’s sorrow, who as a mother experienced one of the greatest sufferings in witnessing the passion and death of her Son.
