When your hunting boots, gloves, coats, bibs, hats, etc. say they have so many grams of insulation they are not referring to how much insulation is in the garment but rather how thick the insulation used is. Whether its Thinsulate, Primaloft, Thermalite, merino wool, or something else, the grams of insulation refers to how much a square meter of that material would weigh. A parka may also be rated at 100g, that does not mean the gloves have just as much insulation as the parka, but rather both garments have the same thickness of insulation used throughout the piece. This is why a pair of ultra-cold weather late season hunting boots could have 2,400 grams of insulation and not actually weigh 2.4 kilograms. It just means if you had a whole square meter of insulation that thick it would weigh 2,400 grams. So knowing how to read these numbers can help you answer the question of how to stay warm when hunting in cold weather.
