Wald, Norway, within the Arctic Circle. 70 degrees North latitude, 31 degrees East longitude. Only 60 kilometers from Russia, it's Norway's easternmost town and a NATO border outpost in geopolitics. From Tromsø to Wald, the latitude difference is only 1 degree, requiring a three-hour "airbus" journey with three stops. The entire town of Wald has a population of just over 2,000. Although there were no more than 10 people hosting us, they were omnipresent and incredibly versatile. The uncle with the "COD IS GREAT" tattoo on his arm, a passionate cook, is actually a hotel partner. The young man who took us to Bird Island by speedboat also took us snowmobile riding, and he was the one steering the semi-submarine the next day! The lady who picked us up at the airport also took us king crab fishing and to the witch's memorial. They were like one big family. Wald was our favorite place in all of Norway.
