The Dangerous Illusion of Becoming Enlightened

In this talk, *Lisa* explains that enlightenment is not about gaining special qualities that separate a guru from a seeker. Referring to a visit to the ashram of Anandamayi Ma, she suggests that the true “quality” of an enlightened being is not a behavior or personality trait, but a boundless presence that exists whether the physical body is alive or not. Lisa emphasizes that the mind is always searching for qualities to copy or attain—such as compassion, power, or superiority—but this search remains within thought and imagination. Instead of striving to become enlightened, she invites listeners to investigate what is aware of the mind itself: the consciousness that knows every thought. Turning inward toward this awareness can feel like dissolving into a “black hole,” where personal boundaries fall away and consciousness reunites with life and beingness (often described as sat–chit–ananda, or peace and bliss). While spiritual practices and therapeutic work may help settle the body-mind and reveal unconscious patterns, she concludes that no separate person ever “arrives” at enlightenment—freedom lies in recognizing what you are beyond the imagined self.
