Phase 1 and 2A Tracks Have Been Connected! "The track bed casting for the northbound tunnel from Bundaran HI to Thamrin Station has been completed. Next, the MRT Jakarta team and contractor will begin casting the track bed for the southbound Bundaran HI-Thamrin tunnel. This work method is being implemented because we are also ready to begin installing platform screen doors," explained Weni Maulina, Construction Director of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda). After that, Weni continued, the team will work on casting the track bed for the northbound Thamrin-Monas tunnel and the southbound Thamrin-Monas tunnel. "We are targeting completion of the track bed casting for both tunnels by the end of 2026," she said. "We are optimistic that all civil works will be completed by the end of 2027 so that the integration, commissioning, and testing (ICT) phase can be completed before segment 1 of Bundaran HI-Monas begins operations," she concluded. The rails used in Phase 2A were manufactured by Nippon Steel, Fukuoka, Japan. The rail structure uses a direct fixation track system with PC sleepers (prestressed concrete sleepers). This type of structure offers several advantages, including high durability of up to 50 years, good transverse resistance, ease of construction (constructability), and low and simple maintenance requirements. One type of sleeper used is Synthetic Sleeper Material for the sleepers, particularly at the points and crossings. This material is made from compressed single strands of glass fiber combined with polyurethane foam, then processed using a high-pressure press. It weighs about the same as wood, but offers several advantages, including: superior mechanical properties, high resistance to water and chemicals (acids, seawater, and alkalis), excellent electrical insulation, and oil resistance. Compared to prestressed concrete sleepers (PC sleepers), this synthetic material is lighter, speeding up construction time. Furthermore, maintenance and repairs are simplified, and the frequency of maintenance and material replacement can be reduced. In terms of rail connections, the Phase 2A project uses the Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) method with flash butt welding and thermit welding techniques. Of the two, flash butt welding offers several advantages, such as joint strength nearly equivalent to the original rail material, resistance to corrosion and wear, and stability against extreme temperature changes.
