One day in the middle of January, we took an unforgettable day trip to the monarch butterfly sanctuary Sierra Chincua located three hours from our home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. We left Antigua Capilla B&B at 8AM and arrived at the sanctuary at 11AM. Once at the Sanctuary, we were assigned to a local guide that escorted us to the butterflies. At an elevation of 11,000 ft (3,300 meters), this could be tough for some. But coming from an elevation of 6,500 ft, it wasn't bat at all for us. There are horses for rent, but we chose to walk. the trek takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. We were limited to half an hour wit hthe butterflies, but since there weren't that many people, we sent an extra 15 minutes there soaking in the experience. Once we finished we headed back to the entrance and ate lunch at one of the many rustic restaurants, a simple meal of quesadillas and atole. After lunch, we headed back to San Miguel de Allende, stopping at the historic town of Tlalpujahua, a 16th century town gold mining town, home of the Shrine of the Virgin of Carmen. We briefly stopped to take some footage of the exquisitely preserved baroque church, and continued on our journey back home. The whole experience lasted approximately 12 well spent hours.
