Why was India invited to the G7 summit and China wasn't? | Iain Begg

India found itself invited to participate in the 52nd G7 summit in Évian, France. But for all India may have to offer to the world’s richest economies, it appears that the main reason it was invited is that it is not China, India's rival. Why would the G7 countries want to talk to New Delhi, but not Beijing? “China has a particular stranglehold on rare earths, which are critical for batteries and many of the other products that are going to be central to the digital age. Now, what the G7 will want to do is to open up alternative sources of supply so they’re not held to ransom by China,” Iain Begg, Professorial Research Fellow at the London School of Economics, told TVP World. “China was a source of supply up to now, and then tried to use it, particularly against the United States, as a means of resisting the Trump tariffs that he was trying to impose on China,” Begg added, explaining that while Beijing has clearly become aware of the leverage it has, it has also galvanized Europe into action.
