A Subscriber Sent Us Here... & We Found 3 NEW Alabama Caves!

A huge shoutout to one of our amazing subscribers who reached out about some potential new caves on their property in Arab, Alabama! Jason and I were recently contacted by a landowner about a pit they believed might qualify as a cave, and they wanted to find out what was inside. When we arrived, we met up with Lindsey, Joey, Lauren, Robert, and 13-year-old Rayne! Since none of them had previous rope experience, we spent some time in their horse barn teaching them the basics of safe vertical caving, including how to properly climb and rappel on rope before heading out. Before calling us, they had been so determined to get inside that they had actually purchased an extension ladder and attempted to lower it into the pit themselves, but the bottom half fell out into the cave! Thankfully, they contacted experienced cavers before attempting it again, and Jason was able to help retrieve the ladder from the bottom. The moment Jason and I saw the cave entrance, we knew immediately that it was unknown to cavers. The first pit measured approximately 25 feet deep and contained around 80 feet of passage. As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one day, they then asked if we wanted to check out another unknown cave on the property… and of course we said YES. Cave number two turned out to be roughly 500 feet long and featured some mystery pick marks inside. Was it mined for saltpeter? Used by moonshiners? After exploring cave number two and checking out a beautiful limestone glade where rare Breadroot flowers grow, they led us to cave number three, which turned out to be the most significant discovery of the day. The large walk-in entrance quickly dropped into a low crawl over flowstone. After pushing through, I realized the cave just kept going and yelled back the best words a caver can ever hear: “Virgin cave!” Suddenly, all of us were scooping virgin cave together. We estimated seeing at least 1,500 feet of passage before having to turn around due to time and not being properly prepared for what we were getting into. We will definitely be returning to continue exploring what this cave has to offer! What an incredible day on the ridge in Alabama building relationships with landowners, sharing safe caving practices, and discovering caves previously unknown to cavers. 🗺️ TIMESTAMPS: 0:10 - A Subscriber Sent Us a Lead! 0:37 - Teaching Vertical Caving in the Barn 3:42 - The 25-Foot Pit (Retrieving the Lost Ladder) 22:15 - Heading to Cave #2: Moonshiners or Saltpeter? 42:56 - Rare Breadroot Flowers & Alabama Limestone Glades 45:25 - Cave #3: Discovering VIRGIN CAVE and SCOOPING BOOTY! 🛠️ GEAR WE USE & SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: Check out our specialized caving gear: https://www.landjoffusa.com/ Follow our adventures on Facebook:   / undergroundearthcaving   Subscribe for more underground exploration!
