Sutton Hoo, Woodbridge, Suffolk– Scenic walking trails, Anglo-Saxon Ship Burial as seen on The Dig
Beautiful countryside walks, woodland trails, stunning valleys and the Royal Burial Ground, steeped in history, Sutton Hoo has it all. Beneath it’s mystical barrows the famous Anglo-Saxon ship burial was discovered in the 1930s. My film takes you on a tour around the Royal Burial Ground and some of the stunning countryside walks. Sutton Hoo in Suffolk is the site of an Anglo-Saxon Royal Burial Ground beneath which one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time was made. The site was labelled “Valley of the Kings” in comparison to the Tutankhamun finds in Egypt. The treasures found in the King’s ship burial led to a complete change in the perceptions about the Anglo-Saxons during this period of the dark ages. It is believed that the ship burial at mound was the burial site of Rædwald, the first Christian king of East Anglia who ruled in the early decades of the seventh century. Mrs Pretty generously donated the Sutton Hoo finds to the British people and today many of the original artefacts are housed in the British Museum including the iconic warrior’s helmet. Sutton Hoo has displays of original artefacts with replicas of others. The story of the excavation has been turned into a Netflix film, The Dig, starring Ralph Fiennes , Carey Mulligan and Lily James. In 1938 an amateur archaeologist Basil Brown, was hired by the landowner, Edith Pretty, to excavate a number of mysterious mounds on her estate, he went on to uncover one of the greatest collection of treasure ever discovered in the UK, an Anglo-Saxon King’s Ship Burial. The mounds actually formed part of a Royal Burial Ground. Today Sutton Hoo is run by the National Trust and visitors can normally visit an exhibition, a viewing tower, enjoy refreshments from the cafe and view of recreation of the ghost ship found in the mounds by Basil Brown. The stunning full-size sculpture of the ship burial brings to life the physical challenge and the size and scale of the ship that the mourners would have dragged up from the river Deben to the burial ground. Some of the walking trails can be found here: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sutt... Unfortunately the exhibition and the viewing platform weren’t open at the time of my visit during the covid crisis and therefore isn’t featured in the film. Please check the national trust website before you visit to see what is open during periods where covid restrictions apply. Sutton Hoo has links with the Silk Roads as featured in a 2025 exhbition at the British Museum.
