The weather was on our side on our last day in the Dolomites, so we decided to spend the day on the trail, covering a total of 21 km. We started from where we slept, near the town of Canazei, and drove up to the Sella Pass, where we left the car and walked the Sassolungo trail that surrounds the 3 peaks: Sassolungo, Punta Grohmann and Sassopiatto. Due to its unique shape, Sassolungo is one of the most recognizable and photographed mountain peaks in the Dolomites. It has a height of 3181m and is the 9th highest peak in the Dolomites. The trail is of medium difficulty, with a difference in elevation of 800 m spread over the 17 km of the official trail. A fairly good physical condition and some experience in the mountains are preferable, because it is not exactly a walk in the park, with some slightly more demanding sections. It would be advisable to do the route between June and October, we were in mid-September when the temperatures had already started to drop, but probably the number of tourists who crowd the route in the summer months was also lower. Along the route you have a superb view, with spectacular peaks and wonderful alpine pastures. You can stop at one of the 5 refuges on the route for food, drink, toilet or even accommodation, if you book in advance. We were not very organized and at the end of the route we ran out of water, because we did not estimate the distances between the refuges well. But we managed to refuel at the last cabin just as they were closing. We will probably return to the Dolomites to explore them in more detail and in better weather, it stayed in our hearts even though the rain followed us almost constantly.
