Enrico Caruso : Songs in Italian and Neapolitan (1) : New restorations : Colourized photos
This is the first of, hopefully, about six videos feauturing songs, rather than arias, sung by Enrico Caruso in Italian and Neapolitan. The recordings on this video are as follows ; 0:00 Triste ritorno (Barthelemy) Rec 30th December 1906 2:24 Lolita (Buzzi-Peccia) Rec 16th March 1908 5:15 Mamma mia, che vo' sapè (Nutile) Rec 6th November 1909 8:46 Manella mia (Valente) Rec 21st January 1914 13:08 Eternamente (Mascheroni) Rec 19th November 1911 17:40 Core'ngrato (Cardillo, Salvatore) Rec 19th November 1911 The recordings were supposed to be in chronological order but after completing this video I found that the discography that I normally use has an incorrect date for Manella mia. I've tried to get a fairly true-to-life sound from these very old recordings but, unfortunately this results in low frequency noise. I have reduced the noise to a level that I hope will be acceptable but if you listen through headphones or a hi fi system with good bass output, you may have to adjust your device to reduce the noise. The first few photos end with an AI animation of a few seconds that I'm experimenting with using a free version at the moment. I like the way it brings the images to life but I would be grateful to hear what you think of it. Unfortunately I couln't find translations to English for all the songs but those I did find are given below. (1) Lolita Love, love, Which the heart yearns for, I want to sing for you Its song. And I want to tell you The martyrdom of my heart, The torments that only Lolita Can alleviate. Ah, come, Because the kisses I want to give you Cannot be counted By the stars in the sky. And the caresses And your sighs, Only you, oh beautiful one, Can give them back to me. Love is coming It's the expected hour. Without your love Tell me, how you get on, Lolita? The sweet smell Of flowers invites Oh, my Lolita, Come for loving! Oh come, my delight, Delay no longer, For I want to kiss you Holding you to my chest. Oh come, my delight, Come, Lolita, For you’ll make me die If you don't come to me Delay no longer, For I want to kiss, to kiss you... Oh come, my delight, Come, Lolita, For you’ll make me die, You’ll make me die, if you don't come! (2) Mamma mia ch'a da sapé! When night falls and comes to burn these weary eyes of mine when I stay up and miss you I feel the need to kiss you. And I call for you, then the day becomes bright but this brightness is for others because I hold the night inside my heart and I can't sleep Ah, Don't make me die! what do you want from me? my mother asks me why this longing can't leave me Ah, Don't make me die! what do you want from me? what do you want to know, Mamma? what do I need to make clear? I can't resist kissing her My mother, this old woman here Who looks at me with joy and who understands my heart In the same way as you do My mother follows me and looks at me but she can't understand What this fever in me is What do you want from me? This longing can't leave me My mother does not understand my need for you, my need to kiss you Ah, don't make me die what do you want from me? My mother knows that you are Like an angel to me I can't make it any clearer (3) Core'ngrato (Ungrateful heart) Catarì, Catarì Why do you say these bitter words to me? Why do you speak and my heart torments me, Catarì? Don't forget that I've given you my heart, Catarì Don't forget it! Catarì, Catarì, what do you mean by these words that upset me? You don't think about my pain You don't think! You don't care! Heart, ungrateful heart You've stolen my life Everything's over And you don't think about it anymore! Catarì, Catarì, you don't know that I even went to church I entered and prayed to God, Catarì, and even said to the confessor, "I'm suffering for that one there!" I'm suffering, I'm suffering, you can't believe how I'm suffering all the tortures... And the Confessor who is holy person, said, " My son, leave her alone, let her be" Heart, ungrateful heart You've stolen my life Everything's over And you don't think about us anymore!
