Exploring Azusa California - “Skunk Place?” | Route 66, Downtown, Murals & Disc Golf
Today I spent the day exploring the city of Azusa, California, a historic community located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains in the San Gabriel Valley. One of the most surprising things about Azusa is the origin of its name. The name comes from a Native American village in the area, and one translation of the original name has been interpreted as meaning “Skunk Place.” I talk about this unusual bit of history while exploring the city. In this video I start at Azusa City Hall and Veterans Freedom Park before heading out to explore historic Route 66 along Foothill Boulevard. I also check out a new 100-year Route 66 mural and walk through parts of downtown Azusa. Along the way I meet up with my friend John for coffee and lunch before continuing to explore the city. We wrap up the day at a nearby park playing frisbee golf. Azusa is often called “The Canyon City” because it sits right at the entrance to San Gabriel Canyon, the gateway to the San Gabriel Mountains and Angeles National Forest. Thanks for coming along as I explore Azusa and some of its history. If you enjoy videos about local history, cities, and interesting places around Southern California, consider subscribing.
