Hiking in Kyrgyzstan-Hiking in Song-Kol (Marking new trails part 1)

Hiking near Song-Kul lake in Kyrgyzstan still remains one of our most beautiful hike in Kyrgyzstan. In June we helped a local NGO called Discover Kyrgyzstan mark and map new trails around the lake of Song-Kul and the town of Ming-Kush in Kyrgyzstan. It was an unforgettable adventure that gave us the opportunity to see some remote pristine landscapes. The first hike I helped mapping out for Discover Kyrgyzstan started on the northern shore of Song Kul Lake. This path has now been given the name "The Shepherd's Way" because it was a trail on which the ancient nomadic shepherds crossed the Uzbek Ashuu mountain pass (at an altitude of 3369 meters) with their cattle to reach the lake. The trek itself was relatively easy but unfortunately, but we weren't so lucky with the weather! We were able to stay dry during the first hours of the trek but as soon as we wanted to cross the pass, we got stuck in a cloud of rain and mist. We couldn't see more than one meter ahead which made it quite dangerous. The path wasn't very visible and was partly covered in snow. It was so slippery that our horse fell (but luckily it didn't get hurt, these animals are so tough!).
