Jake Thackray - The Statues (1981)

Jake Thackray performing 'The Statues' at the Royal Oak in Nailsea, broadcast on 'Jake Thackray and Songs' in 1981. From the album 'The Last Will and Testament of Jake Thackray', released in 1967. There’s a story of John Lennon meeting Thackray in Abbey Road and singing the whole of “The Statues” to him. According to Paul McCartney, Lennon brought “a tape the singer Jake Thackray had done for him" to Rishikesh in India. "He was one of the people we bumped into at Abbey Road. John liked his stuff, which he’d heard on television. Lots of wordplay and very suggestive, so very much up John’s alley. I was fascinated by his unusual guitar style. John did ‘Happiness Is A Warm Gun’ as a Jake Thackray thing at one point, as I recall.”
