You've probably heard the expression, "What a dramatic turn of events!" more than once in your life. In fiction, this phrase means the same as in reality. In a novel, film, series, play... there are always crucial points that move the action forward and maintain narrative tension. In short, plot twists are those events that cause a change to propel the story forward or shift it in a different direction. There are three major plot twists in the classic three-act structure: the first point or conflict, the midpoint, and the climax. There can also be minor plot twists that give the plot a small push but don't change the essential direction of the story. In this video, I'll explain in detail the first major plot twist, the conflict, and the minor plot twist at the beginning, the inciting incident. I'll give you classic (and not-so-classic) examples from literature, film, and streaming series. This way, you can clearly understand how they work and what premises you can use to apply them to your own stories.
