During the rule of the Yadava king Ramachandra, Alauddin Khilji of the Delhi Sultanate raided Devagiri in 1296, forcing the Yadavas to pay heavy tribute. When tribute payments ceased, Alauddin sent a second expedition to Devagiri in 1308, forcing Ramachandra to become his vassal. In 1328, Muhammad bin Tughlaq of the Delhi Sultanate moved the capital of his kingdom to Devagiri, renaming it Daulatabad. The Sultan made Daulatabad (Devagiri) his second capital in 1327. [24] Some scholars argue that the idea behind the capital move was rational, as it was more or less in the center of the kingdom and geographically protected the capital from attacks from the northwestern frontier. At Daulatabad fort, he found the area arid and dry. His strategy of moving the capital failed miserably. So he returned to Delhi, earning the nickname "Mad King." The next significant event in the Daulatabad Fort timeline was the construction of the Chand Minar by the Bahmani Sultan Hasan Gangu Bahmani, also known as Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah (reigned 3 August 1347 – 11 February 1358). Hasan Gangu built the Chand Minar as a replica of the Qutub Minar in Delhi, of which he was a great admirer. He commissioned Iranian architects to construct the minaret, who used lapis lazuli and red ochre for color. Currently, the minaret is off-limits to tourists due to a suicide case. Continuing into the fort, we find the Chini Mahal, a VIP prison built by Aurangzeb. He imprisoned Abul Hasan Qutub Shah, ruler of the Golconda Sultanate of Hyderabad. Most of the current fortifications were built under the Bahmanis and Nizam Shah of the Ahmednagar Sultanate. The Mughal governor of the Deccan under Shah Jahan captured the fort in 1632 and imprisoned the Nizam Shahi prince.
