F40PH-4C on the MBTA Commuter Rail: RSTX 1002’s First Month in Passenger Service - January 2026

If you are interested in more content from me, my photography can be viewed on Instagram at:   / rail_spike_productions   About this video: After months of testing and mechanical work, Rolling Stock Solutions F40PH-4C RSTX 1002 began operating on revenue MBTA Commuter Rail trains for the first time in January of 2026. RSS F40PH-4Cs are being leased by the MBTA to fill the locomotive deficit as a result of some of their HSP46s being sent out to MPI for rebuilding. The 1001 was the first to arrive to the MBTA in late 2024, but was only present for display events and wasn’t actually completed or intended to enter service at the time. As of the time of this upload, the 1002 is still the only one of these leased locomotives that has operated in revenue service. Various issues have prevented the others from operating as indented but work is underway to get more in service in the future. Clips in this video were filmed all over the North Side throughout January, with the final one showing the 1002’s rescue from Swampscott, MA as a result of some of the issues delaying these locomotives from entering service sooner.
