Calvo as a child began piano studies with maestro Tomás Posada. He also studied violin and was a member of a local band. In order to seek a better economic situation, his family moved to Bogotá, arriving in the capital on May 11, 1905. Calvo tried to obtain a scholarship to study at the Academy of Music that the government granted to all members of a musical band, but he could not get it because he did not have the necessary recommendations. Two years later Calvo finally was invited to belong to the music academy, with which he was able to complete his musical education adequately. There he was able to meet maestro Guillermo Uribe Holguín, who instructed him in the interpretation of the cello. On October 14, 1916 Luis Antonio Calvo discovered, through the medical attention of Dr. Carlos Tirado Macías, that he suffered from Hansen's disease, leprosy, for which he had to be admitted to the Agua de Dios lazaretto, where later would compose most of his works. A tribute was paid to him at the Colón Theater as a farewell, and on May 12, 1916 he was confined in Agua de Dios, where the Salesian parents, directors of the lazaretto, provided him with all kinds of comforts by giving Calvo and his family a house. Shortly after his confinement, he was presented with a piano by the citizens of Bogotá. Because of that, Calvo devoted himself almost entirely to this instrument. Luis Antonio Calvo died on April 22, 1945 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon at the Agua de Dios Sanatorium, due to an attack of uremia. Various sources indicate that possibly his leprosy had been cured from time before the moment of his death; It is impossible, however, to confirm or refute these theories because the musician's medical record was destroyed, along with several of his works. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please support this channel / fyrexia
