Hard Drive Speakers playing Second Reality (Future Crew / Assembly 1993)

Spin Doctor is a DIY speaker system built from hard drives. The HDD actuator coil acts like a voice coil in a traditional speaker, causing the read/write arm to vibrate and produce sound. In this video, the system plays Second Reality, the legendary demo by Future Crew that won Assembly 1993. Four hard drives total, two per stereo channel, with a crossover so different drives reproduce different frequency ranges. The platters spin rhythmically using motor controllers triggered by peaks in the audio signal. The result is a mechanical remix of a demoscene classic.
