Half of Parkinson's patients have this virus in their brain
What if a common virus — one most people carry without ever knowing it — turns out to be connected to Parkinson's disease? Half of Parkinson's patients have this virus in their brain. A Common Virus Found in Parkinson's Brains — But Not in Healthy Ones. What Does It Mean? In July 2025, researchers at Northwestern Medicine published a study that found human pegivirus in the brains of Parkinson's patients — but not in the brains of people who didn't have the disease. And when they looked at immune system data from over 1,000 people, the pattern held. Nobody is calling this a cause yet. But researchers are calling it a direction — and possibly the start of an entirely new field of investigation. In this video I break down what human pegivirus is, what the Northwestern team found in brain tissue and spinal fluid, why the immune system response matters, and why the connection to hepatitis C drugs could eventually be significant. This is early research. Small sample. Real questions still unanswered. But for a disease where most cases have no known cause — this is exactly the kind of lead that matters. I'm Kim.
