In this Day 1 workshop, we explain validity in research using simple, practical examples for students, researchers, thesis writers, and applied research professionals. The session focuses on three practical strategies commonly used when developing, adapting, or reviewing a questionnaire: Face validity – checking whether the questionnaire appears appropriate, clear, and relevant for measuring the intended concept. Content validity – using expert review to assess whether the items adequately cover the main parts of the construct. Pilot testing – testing the questionnaire with a small group similar to the study population to identify unclear wording, feasibility issues, completion time, response patterns, and early reliability concerns. Using questionnaire examples, this video shows how to move beyond vague statements such as “the instrument was validated” and instead explain the actual steps taken to improve and justify a research tool. This session is useful for anyone working on questionnaires for theses, dissertations, manuscripts, public health research, social science research, education research, and health-related studies.
