In general, anemia is a term that encompasses conditions associated with the production or loss of red blood cells. However, there are different types of the condition, with varied causes and distinct treatments. Some of the most common types of anemia are iron-deficiency anemia, thalassemia, aplastic anemia, and sickle cell disease. More common in the Black population, the latter affects far more people than initially imagined: approximately 300,000 individuals are born with sickle cell disease worldwide each year.
