1977 Pontiac Trans Am – Front Seat Restoration, Rust Cleanup & New Upholstery Install
We’re finally back on the Trans Am after a break to finish the dirt‑cheap LS build — and today we tackle something that’s been waiting a long time: the front seat restoration. Both front and rear upholstery sets have been sitting on the shelf, so it’s time to tear everything down, clean it up, fix what’s broken, and start installing the new covers. – The front seats are stripped down to bare frames, revealing light surface rust, worn buns, and tired hardware. – Frames are wire‑wheeled, blasted with baking soda and sand where needed, and coated in Rust‑Oleum to stop future rust. – Plastic trim pieces are cleaned and refinished with vinyl paint. – Seat buns are repaired, test‑fitted, and hog‑ringed back onto the frames — with plenty of stretching, heat‑gunning, and wrestling to get everything aligned. – The upper and lower upholstery sections are installed, including the nylon strips, beads, and hidden attachment points. – The passenger seat is fully rebuilt, tracks cleaned, mechanisms freed up, and everything reassembled with new hardware. – The driver seat reveals broken spot welds, which are repaired and reinforced before getting the same restoration treatment. – The original rear plastic panels don’t fit the new upholstery well, so a set of Camaro panels are cleaned, painted, and installed for a much better look. – Both front seats are now solid, tight, and looking great — a huge improvement over the wobbly originals. Next up: restoring the rear seats, installing new carpet, finishing the glove box and vent ducts, and finally getting the Trans Am back on the ground with a full interior. Thanks for watching, and we’ll see you in the next one.
