The Kobe City Chamber Orchestra, a professional orchestra whose subsidies have been discontinued by the city of Kobe, is at a major crossroads: survival or dissolution. We interviewed the orchestra about its current situation. The Kobe City Chamber Orchestra is a professional orchestra based in Kobe City. It is a small orchestra consisting of 26 members, and its charm lies in its harmonious ensemble playing. The orchestra was established by the city of Kobe in 1981 and is currently operated by the Kobe City Cultural Promotion Foundation, an affiliated organization of the city. For over 40 years, it has collaborated with world-renowned musicians and conductors, playing a vital role in Kobe's musical culture. Until now, the city has provided the orchestra with subsidies totaling approximately 85 million yen annually, representing 70% of its income, as operating funds. However, in January of this year, the city decided to discontinue the subsidies at the end of the next fiscal year, citing the orchestra's high reliance on subsidies and low audience numbers.
