In Part 2 of our late-19th-century Australian Red Cedar chest restoration, we are diving deep into major structural repairs, timber splicing, and a truly bizarre discovery inside the drawers! After uncovering those strange carved marks around the knob holes in Part 1, we find some incredible new clues inside the second long drawer itself. The timber reveals distinct wear that looks exactly like a rat or a small animal was intentionally kept inside the drawer—perhaps as a beloved historical pet! Join me as we decode this unusual piece of history and get to work stabilizing this beautiful colonial chest. What we tackle in Part 2:• The Knob Hole Splicing: Correcting the weirdly carved holes on the second long drawer by carefully cutting out the wasted timber and tapping in matching, grain-aligned native cedar patches.• Runner & Stop Restoration: Rebuilding the worn drawer runners with matching, old-growth Hoop Pine and making fresh cedar drawer stops from scratch to keep everything sliding smoothly.• Woodturning & Molding Repairs: Turning a brand-new matching timber block on the lathe to perfectly level up the feet on the chest, and executing a patch repair on a missing chunk of the bottom corner molding.
