V/L 2024 - Quanto capitalismo possiamo sopportare?

MATTEI Moderated by MARCO PACINI To the question "How much capitalism can we tolerate?" we respond by stammering stale phrases, victims as we are of a compulsion to repeat that makes us consider inevitable, "natural," what is in every sense the historical-ideological product of a segment of humanity—ours—that has proclaimed itself to be everything. The question could be posed even more radically: "How much economy can we tolerate?", given that economic orthodoxy has completely removed the original (Aristotelian) meaning of oikonomia as the "art" of keeping the house in order. The house (the Earth and the living beings that inhabit it) is not in order. Not even from the perspective of "civil progress," which has long been retreating from the promises of emancipation and equality; nor under that of "material progress," which has taken center stage, heedless of the laws of physics and the limits of the biosphere. MAURO BONAIUTI teaches Solidarity Economy and Sustainability at the University of Turin. He was among the promoters of the Anti-Utilitarian Movement in the Social Sciences and the Solidarity Economy Network, and among the founders of the Association for Degrowth, which he currently chairs. He works on transdisciplinary issues between economics and ecology. His latest book is: The Great Transition: The Decline of Industrial Civilization and the Response of Degrowth (preface by S. Latouche, Bollati Boringhieri 2023). CLARA E. MATTEI teaches Economics at the New School for Social Research in New York and was a member of the School of Social Sciences at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton between 2018 and 2019. Her research on the history of capitalism explores the relationship between economic ideas and technocratic policies.
